FAST……..FAST…….FAST! That’s how I remember Danny Sargent. Such an Amazing skater! Now you’re probably wondering who is this guy? Well Danny Sargent skated for Schmitt Stix and then he was part of one of the most influential skateboard companies in the 90’s The New Deal. Guys like Ed Templeton, Andy Howell, Justin Girard and tons of other great skaters that came from Schmitt Stix to form a small skater run company. Danny Sargent’s most memorable parts are in videos like Sick boys, Useless Wooden Toys and 1281. His parts usually were of him skating the streets of San Fransisco just killing it! One spot that stands out when you think Danny Sargent is the Safeway Curb, he absolutely crushed this curb with Smith grinds, Lip slide, Feebles and Blunts just flying as fast as he could, grinding or sliding the whole curb. The only down side to Danny’s career is that he got super involved in drugs and let it take over his life and his skateboarding. It just goes to show you drugs and skateboarding don’t mix if you want to get high go skating that’s the best high ever! I think today, Danny would agree! Check out Danny’s video parts on Youtube.

Throwback Matt Hensley

Well I just want to start off by saying  Matt Hensley is the best street skater of all time! His style, His taste in music and his ability to skate anything! Not to mention Mid shoes, cargo shorts and chain wallets! Matt was best known for being the face of  H-street skateboards and I think that was evident when Matt’s pic was the cover of  Hokus Pokus, one of the most revolutionary videos in skateboarding. I remember not a day went by, that I didn’t start my day off by watching Hokus Pokus especially Hensley’s Part before I went out skating. This video got me so pumped and taught me so much about tricks creativity and style. Matt is more known today for starting the clothing company Innes and of course for playing accordion in the band Flogging Molly. Matt also skated for Plan B in the hay day and Companies like Airwalk, Duffs and Black Label.  I got a chance a few summers ago to hang out with Matt on two different occasions one time before a Flogging Molly show and another time on a demo tour with the whole Innes team. Matt is hands down the coolest pro I have ever come in contact with, he loved talking about skating and was super cool and signed a ton of stuff for me. There is so much stuff in skateboarding that Matt played a huge roll in Style, Music, clothing, progression of tricks and progression of skateboarding. Matt recently started a Pub and Grille in Carlsbad Ca, called the Flying Elephant. So if your out that way stop in and Grab a drink and a bite to eat. Enjoy the pics!

Neil Blender Throw Back

January 7th, 2010

Neil Blender is probably hands down one of the most influential skaters of all time! Not only was Neil a great skater but he was a great artist as well. Neil Blender was pretty much the face of G&S skateboards through the 80’s not only with his skating but with his artistic ability. When I think of G&S skateboards the first person that comes to mind is Neil Blender and all the great board graphics he designed. He was one of the pioneers of skaters doing their own art (artist/skaters) in the industry along with guys like Chris Miller and Mark Gonzales. Neil Blender had a smooth style about his skating and combine that with the fact that he always looked like he was having a great time! You could tell that he just loved skateboarding period! Neil was responsible for inventing a lot of tricks like the lien air, which is just his name backwards and even street tricks like the no-comply. Guys like Neil Blender, Lance Mountain and Mark Gonzales made skateboarding more interesting and fun for everyone in their creative care free style of skating. In 1990 Neil Blender, Chris Carter and Mike Hill started the Alien Workshop in Dayton Ohio. They went away from the main stream California system and made Alien Workshop a successful brand that is still killing it today and is responsible for pros like Rob Dyrdek and Michigans own Josh Kalis. They showed skating that you didn’t have to be located in California to have a sick skateboard company. I think this allowed skating to expand and allow kids to feel more connected with skateboarding especially kids in the Midwest states. I hope you enjoy checking out all these pics of Neil as much as I have. I threw a couple ads from skateboard mags that I vividly remember seeing a lot back in those days. I also put a few sick street and vert pics of Neil and some of his boards and graphics he designed. I also threw in the album cover that he did for Dinosaur Jr.s With out a sound. Oh and I found this sick pick of the Chin ramp with Neil standing off to the side looking on just in case you were wondering. It’s great to see Neils influence in skateboarding still to this day! Speaking of which Neil has a Nike Sb collaboration Dunk low coming out this summer along with some shirts as well. So look for that stuff to hit the doors here and pick some stuff up and support skateboarding!! Support Neil Blender!!

Tomorrow is the start of something good! Throw back Thursdays

January 6th, 2010

So tomorrow is going to be the first day of THROW BACK THURSDAYS here at Skaters Advocate. So I  guess you are probably wondering ahhh…. what is throw back Thursdays??? So allow me to explain….Every Thursday I will post a small but sweet Bio on an old pro skateboarder of the 70’s, 80’s or even 90’s at this point. I will post a ton of pics and do a little biography on that skateboarder and put my own view in there as well. Its just something I have been wanting to do for a while and hey its my shop so why not! It will give the younger generation of skateboarding a little insight on where skateboarding has come from and I guess give a little respect to those guys who paved the way for todays generation of skating. So check it out every Thursday and learn something and appreciate skateboarding from a different perspective. This Thursdays Skater is going to be none other than Neil Blender and I am really stoked on this to be really honest! So tune in every Thursday don’t forget, mark it on your calendar or whatever. Just make sure you check it out and have fun and love skating as much as I do! Thanks Paul Walters
